The Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) opened to the public in November 2025, right next to the Giza plateau. It is now the largest archaeological museum in the world devoted to a single civilisation, and it has changed how a Cairo visit needs to be planned.
Do you need to book Grand Egyptian Museum tickets in advance?
Yes, it is now mandatory: since December 2025, the GEM has moved to online-only ticketing, sold in fixed time slots. Walk-up purchase at the gate is no longer possible, so turning up without a booking — even with cash in hand — is not enough to get in.
Why did the museum switch to online-only booking?
Timed slots spread visitor flow across the day instead of concentrating it at opening time. For visitors that means shorter queues at the entrance, but also less flexibility: once a slot is chosen, it has to be kept.
How much does a Grand Egyptian Museum ticket cost?
The adult ticket for an international visitor sat at around EGP 1,450 in August 2026, with a reduced rate for students holding a card and for children, and free entry for the youngest. Price checked in August 2026 — verify it on the museum's official ticket office before you go: it is revised regularly.
How far in advance should you book a time slot?
As early as your travel dates are confirmed — especially in high season (roughly October to April), when the most sought-after slots, morning and late afternoon, fill up first. In low season a few days' notice is often enough, but booking early is still the only way to be sure of getting the slot you want.
What are the Grand Egyptian Museum's opening hours?
The museum opens every day. The galleries admit visitors from 9am to 6pm, with a late opening until 9pm on Wednesdays and Saturdays; the complex itself opens earlier and closes later. Last entry is one hour before the galleries close. Hours checked in August 2026 on the official ticket office — reconfirm them when you book your slot.
Does a GEM ticket include access to the Giza pyramids?
No. The GEM and the Giza plateau are two separate sites with two separate tickets, even though they sit close to one another geographically. Some itineraries combine both in a single day, but that still means two separate entries to pay for.
Can a French-speaking guide buy my tickets for me?
No, and that is deliberate: your guide takes you through the museum, but we do not resell tickets. You book and buy your ticket directly at the official price, which rules out any hidden margin on it. The guide’s role starts inside the museum, explaining the collections — not in the ticket queue.
- Book your time slot online as soon as your travel dates are confirmed.
- Keep your e-ticket accessible on your phone (and ideally a printed backup).
- Bring photo ID — it is often requested alongside the ticket at entry.
- Arrive a little before your slot time rather than after.
- Tell your guide the exact time of your slot so the rest of the day can be planned around it.
