Overview
This day shows a side of Cairo that many rushed visitors never see: the city itself, with its layers of Christian, Islamic and merchant history, well beyond the pyramids. We start in Coptic Old Cairo, around the Hanging Church and the Ben Ezra Synagogue, before moving on to the Citadel of Saladin and the Mosque of Muhammad Ali overlooking the city.
The afternoon ends at Khan el-Khalili, Cairo's great historic bazaar. Your guide takes you there for the atmosphere, the architecture and the history of the place — not to push you toward any particular shop. You're free to wander, haggle or simply watch, at your own pace.
This excursion involves a fair amount of walking and suits travellers who want to understand Cairo beyond its archaeological reputation.
