Overview
The museum on Tahrir Square was long Egypt's flagship museum, and it still holds collections the Grand Egyptian Museum hasn't taken over. The building itself, opened at the very start of the twentieth century, is part of the visit: dense halls, old-style display cases, an atmosphere very different from a modern museum.
It's a shorter, more affordable visit than the GEM, ideal if your time in Cairo is limited or if you prefer a more intimate, less curated experience. Your guide takes you to the pieces that genuinely matter, so you don't waste time wandering through secondary rooms of little interest.
For those who want to see the New Kingdom royal mummies, the dedicated room requires a separate ticket, which we recommend depending on your interest in that period.
